Autism resources
Here are some things that I have found incredibly helpful as I have walked this journey to educate myself about autism.
A simple internet search
In today's day and age...there is an INCREDIBLE wealth of information available at the tips of your fingers. Just doing a simple google search gives you a wealth of knowledge!
Here are some of the topics that I searched...
- autism in girls
- autism in teenagers
- autism in adults
- autism signs and symptoms
- signs of autism in different age groups
Movies and TV shows
This movie is about Temple Grandin, an autistic woman who made a very successful career using her autistic talents. I loved this movie, as it gave me a very good idea of what it must be like inside an autistic mind.
This is a series on Netflix that follows individuals with autism as they journey through the world of dating and relationships. I found this show to be incredibly uplifting and wonderful! It gives you a glimpse into the gentle and loving nature and the simpleness of connections.
Books
I HIGHLY recommend this book if you have a child heading to college that shows signs of being on the autism spectrum. This book did a great job of explaining the laws around accommodations and gave very useful tips on how to make the transition to college smoother.
I really liked the personal stories that they included in each chapter. Many of the stories described things that were happening in my daughter's educational world as well.
This book was incredibly eye opening. It tells the life story of a woman who walked through life always feeling "different," but she wasn't sure why. It was later in her adult life when she was finally diagnosed with autism that things began to fall in place and make sense.
I found myself relating to SO MANY of the situations that this woman experienced! That is what first made me wonder.....hmmm, maybe I have these traits as well?
Facebook Groups
This group is private and heavily visited by adults who are on the autism spectrum. I found it a great place to learn about autism, right from the source....autistic people.
This a great place to find out how things are interpreted by those on the autism spectrum.
